AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES
DATE: 20 JANUARY 2024
, QUESTION 1:
A flea market is arranged at your school, and you are responsible for taking charge of a
group of Grade 7s. Discuss your role under the following headings:
1.1 Before the flea market
- I need to ensure that learners understand the aim of the flea market.
- If there is a specific theme to the flea market, I ensure that the learners – when
planning their products to sell – stick to the theme.
- It is my role to introduce learners to the tasks and activities that they will do while
running their stall at the flea market.
- I need to educate my learners so that they can work out their costs and are able to
determine a selling price that is competitive yet still yields them a profit.
- Arranging where learners have their stalls as well as making sure that they are selling
suitable products is also part of my responsibility.
- I need to make sure that learners plan properly and have all they need in time for
the flea market.
- I inform the learners about the importance of proper advertising so that their
customers are aware of the products being sold:
o Creating posters
o Skits during assembly promoting their stall.
o Announcements over intercom.
1.2 During the flea market
- I need to help learners to set up their stalls and display their goods.
- I need to help with any sales disputes and help learners with giving change to the
customers.
- I must be at hand to ensure that learners can get help from me should they require
it.
- Making sure that there are ethical business standards maintained also becomes my
task.
- I need to ensure that I am available at the flea market when help is needed.
- Encourage the learners to carry on promoting their product even though they are
selling. (Why their product is better than their competitors’.)
1.3 After the flea market
- Once the flea market is over, I will have to help learners pack up and cash up, etc.
- In the lessons following the market day, I need to create situations in the classroom
in which the learners will share their experiences of the market day.
o Analyse their successes and failures.
o Discuss the elements of business as found in such a market day setting.
o Answer any questions that the learners might have.
- The learners must also be allowed to convey their thoughts in written assignments.
- I will go through their budgets circumspectly to see where possible mistakes have
been made and make suggestions, so these mistakes do not recur.
