 CAPS provides teachers with detailed guidelines for what to teach and how to
assess learners on a grade-by-grade and subject-by-subject basis.
 The primary goal of CAPS is to reduce administrative burdens on teachers while also
ensuring consistency and guidance for teachers when teaching.
 Subjects are taught and learned with specific objectives, competencies, content
areas that are emphasized, and content areas that are given more weight than
others.
 In the CAPS, what were previously referred to as Learning Outcomes and
Assessment? Standards are now known as Content and Skills.
 In CAPS, literacy is now referred to as language and numeracy as mathematics. The
term" subject" now refers to a topic of study.
 Teachers can follow the precise week-by-week planning provided by CAPS. It

The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Natural Sciences in the
Senior Phase outlines several skills that learners are expected to develop. These skills
are essential for understanding scientific concepts, conducting investigations, and
applying scientific knowledge to real-world situations.

1. Observation and Inquiry Skills

Learners should develop the ability to carefully observe natural phenomena, noting
details and patterns. This skill involves using all senses, as appropriate, to gather
data.
Encouraging curiosity, learners should ask relevant and insightful questions about
what they observe. This skill helps in identifying problems and areas for further
investigation.

2. Scientific Investigation Skills

Learners should be able to design and carry out experiments and investigations. This
involves identifying variables, formulating hypotheses, and determining the methods
and materials needed.
Accurate recording of data during investigations is crucial. Learners should use tables,
charts, and other tools to systematically collect data.
Learners should be skilled in analyzing the data collected to identify trends, patterns,
and anomalies. This involves using mathematical and logical reasoning.
Based on the data analysis, learners should be able to draw reasoned conclusions
and relate them to their initial hypotheses or questions.

3. Application and Problem-Solving Skills

Learners should be able to apply the scientific concepts and principles they have
learned to new situations. This involves using scientific knowledge to solve real-world
problems and make decisions.
Encouraging creativity, learners should think of innovative ways to approach problems
and develop new solutions based on scientific principles.
