QUESTION 1
Identify the environmental impacts that were experienced during
Building collapse at Geoge, Western Cape and Sandbank collapse in
Ballito, Durban (10)
The building and Sandbank collapse at George and Ballito respectively have led to
massive destruction of the environment. The consequences of these unfortunate
incidents on the environment can be explained by observing the following events.
Environmental contamination
The collapse of the two buildings has contributed to environmental population. The
increased debris and rubble affected the environment by creating hide-outs for
dangerous animals such as snakes. Human activities such as recreation can also be
affected by the building collapse due to imposed psychological fear.
Water Quality Degradation
Water is considered the root for human survival. According to Ganiyu, Sable and El-
Din (2022), people can only live for three days without water. Therefore, the collapse
of Sandbank and another building at George could have affected the marine and
coastal water quality. The increment of pollutants in the water renders it unsafe and
unclean for human consumption (Xiong, Tang, Huang, Ruan, Jiang, Chen, Liu, Kang
and Liu., 2020). According to the research carried out by Ateia, Alalm, Awfa, Johnson,
and Yoshimura (2020 and the World Health Organisation, consumption of unclean
water can lead to epidemic diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, typhoid, polio,
dysentery and hepatitis A. These diseases are dire and cause loss of life if not well
catered for (Chaudhry and Malik., 2017).
