, A. Exploring an emotional stress on our black communities’
Grandmothers singly raising their abandoned grandchildren.1

B. Abstract
The current situation where our grandmothers are finding themselves being
compelled households breadwinners for their grandchildren without the parents in
perpetuity is worrisome and so much concerning. Their overburdening on leading
skip-generation households and even the second and the third-generation
households could make them perish faster without fulfilling their God calling. This
is in contradiction of what the bible clearly teaches that grandchildren are a
blessing to be embraced, not a burden to be avoided, which it also tells us that it
is a blessing to know our grandchildren. Psalm 128:6 states, “May you see your
children's children.”
God designed grandparents as disciple-makers for the purpose of passing on a
heritage of faith to future generations. So grandparents are partners who have a
critical role in reaching and discipling future generations, but not sole-care givers
to the grandchildren with no parents (Bale, E., 2023).
Instead of them being so burdened by sole and primary parenting they need to be
looked after by their children and then in turn “they will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green” Psalm 92:14.

This we don’t see happening in the current situation where 4-5 children in South
Africa especially in black communities permanently and completely dependent on
grandmothers without parents. This could heightened their level of emotional
stress, anxiety and major depressive disorder which could lead to their untimely
peril or death.
