Modern democracy is a system of government where power is vested in the people.
It’s characterized by fair elections, where citizens have the right to vote and choose their
leaders. The government operates transparently and is accountable to the people.
Public participation is encouraged, and there is a strong emphasis on the protection of
human rights and freedoms.
Citizenship education is about teaching individuals, especially young people, about
their rights, responsibilities, and roles as citizens within a society. It aims to develop
informed, active, and responsible citizens who can contribute positively to their
communities. This education includes knowledge about democratic principles, laws, and
the importance of participating in civic duties.
1.2
There are two types of citizenship education: active and passive. Active citizenship
education encourages learners to engage in activities that promote civic participation
and community involvement. It’s hands-on, involving students in real-world issues and
encouraging them to take part in discussions, volunteer work, and other forms of civic
engagement. Passive citizenship education, on the other hand, is more about imparting
knowledge and understanding of civic concepts without necessarily engaging students
in practical activities.
I believe the active approach is more beneficial for learners. This method not only
provides knowledge but also empowers students to apply what they’ve learned in real-
life situations. By actively participating in their communities, students develop a sense of
responsibility and learn the importance of civic engagement. They gain practical
experience that prepares them for their roles as active, informed citizens. This approach
fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, which are essential for
personal growth and the development of a vibrant, democratic society.
