Section 1: [10 marks]
A REFLECTION of your experience(s) in terms of science lessons/activities (citing EXAMPLES where possible) at the
school where you did your recent Teaching Practice session.
[See the INSTRUCTION PAGE for the points you could take into account, as well as the CRITERIA RUBRIC for the
marks of this section.]
I did my Teaching Practice at Litha primary school in Gugulethu, one of the townships in Cape Town. I had a great time
teaching my grade 6 learners Natural Sciences & Technology. I taught two Natural Sciences & Technology topics;
solids, liquids & gases and mixtures of materials. I taught the arrangement of the particles of solids, liquids & gases in
week one and mixtures of materials in week two. Throughout these lessons, I can reflect on the following aspects:
Amount of time
Successes/ failures of specific lessons
Learners’ responses to my teaching methods/ strategies and those of the mentor-teacher
How to improve the teaching and assessment of science
How the science and content and the teaching-learning can be made relevant and meaningful to young learners.
At the school that I was teaching at, the time allocated for a single period was 30 minutes. This time allocation was
not enough to conduct a lesson and give the learners an activity. For example, during the first lesson of Natural
Sciences & Technology, the learners could not finish writing their class activity because they ran out of time. They
could not complete the worsheets during class time. This may result to failure of the lesson. However, both the
lessons on the arrangement of the particles of the three states of matter and mixtures of materials was a success
because I had enough resources and the learners participated throughout the lesson. The aims and objectives of
, the lessons were achieved. The learners responded well to my teaching methods and those of the mentor-teacher.
They understood and grasped the crucial concepts of the lessons. They adapted well to the teaching methods and
strategies.
The teaching and assessment of science can be improved in the following ways:
Give the learners practical and hands-on activities
Promote scientific thinking
Implement learner-centered teaching approaches
The science content and the teaching-learning can be made relevant and neaningful to learners in the following
ways:
Take the learners outside to witness what you are teaching them
Collaborate technology in your lessons
Be enthusiastic
I enjoyed the science lessons because of how the learners perceived the lessons, responded to the teaching strategies,
participated in class and their eagerness to learn. I think it is safe to say that I managed to achieve the aims and
objectives of my lessons.
