Assignment 3
DUE 2ND August 2024
, Part 1: Understanding ICT Integration in South African Schools (40 marks)
1.
ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) encompasses all technologies
used to handle telecommunications, broadcast media, intelligent building
management systems, audiovisual processing and transmission systems, and
network-based control and monitoring functions. Essentially, ICT includes any
communication device or application, such as computers, smartphones, digital TVs,
and software programs.
Integration of ICT in South African education is crucial because:
• Enhanced Learning Opportunities: ICT provides access to a vast amount of
information and educational resources online, enabling students to learn
beyond the traditional curriculum and classroom boundaries.
• Skill Development: Proficiency in ICT is essential for students' future careers,
as many jobs now require digital literacy. Early exposure helps students
develop these critical skills.
• Bridging Educational Gaps: ICT can help bridge educational disparities by
providing access to quality learning materials and resources, particularly in
under-resourced rural areas.
• Interactive Learning: ICT facilitates interactive and engaging learning
experiences, making education more dynamic and student-centered.
• Teacher Efficiency: ICT tools can enhance teachers' productivity and
efficiency in lesson planning, delivery, and assessment.
2.
1. Infrastructure Deficits:
o Challenge: Many schools, especially in rural areas, lack the necessary
infrastructure such as reliable electricity, internet connectivity, and
modern classroom facilities.
o Example: Schools in Limpopo and Eastern Cape often struggle with
inconsistent power supply and poor internet access, making it difficult
to maintain and utilize ICT equipment effectively.
2. Teacher Training and Support:
o Challenge: Many educators are not adequately trained to integrate ICT
into their teaching practices. There is a significant need for professional
development programs that focus on ICT skills.
o Example: A study by the Department of Basic Education (DBE)
highlighted that only a small percentage of teachers in underprivileged
schools had received formal ICT training.
3. Financial Constraints:
o Challenge: Budget limitations prevent schools from purchasing the
necessary ICT equipment and software. This is especially problematic
in poorer communities.
o Example: Schools in townships and informal settlements often rely on
outdated or donated equipment, which may not meet current
educational needs or standards.
