Anorexia Nervosa (AN)
Diagnostic Criteria (DSM-5):
1. Restriction of Energy Intake:
o Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though
underweight.
o Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal
weight for age and height (typically defined as less than 85% of
expected weight).
2. Distorted Body Image:
o Disturbance in the way one's body weight or shape is
experienced.
o Undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or
denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
Hallmark Features:
• Severe Weight Loss: Dramatic weight loss due to extreme
restriction of caloric intake.
• Body Dysmorphia: Persistent perception of being overweight
despite being underweight.
• Physical Symptoms: Amenorrhea (in females), dry skin, brittle hair
and nails, lanugo (fine hair growth), and sensitivity to cold.
• Behavioral Symptoms: Preoccupation with food, dieting, and body
image; excessive exercise; and refusal to eat certain foods or entire
food groups.
Bulimia Nervosa (BN)
Diagnostic Criteria (DSM-5):
, 1. Recurrent Episodes of Binge Eating:
o Eating, in a discrete period (e.g., within any 2-hour period), an
amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would
eat during a similar period under similar circumstances.
o A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode.
2. Recurrent Inappropriate Compensatory Behaviors:
o Behaviors to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced
vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, enemas, fasting, or
excessive exercise.
3. Frequency and Duration:
o Binge eating and compensatory behaviors occur, on average,
at least once a week for three months.
4. Self-Evaluation:
o Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight.
Hallmark Features:
• Binge-Purge Cycle: Regular episodes of excessive food intake
followed by attempts to counteract the potential weight gain.
• Normal Weight Range: Most individuals with BN are within a normal
weight range or may be slightly overweight.
• Physical Symptoms: Electrolyte imbalances, gastrointestinal issues,
dental erosion, and calluses on the knuckles (from induced vomiting).
• Behavioral Symptoms: Secrecy about eating behaviors, frequent
visits to the bathroom after meals, and fluctuations in weight.
Binge-Eating Disorder (BED)
Diagnostic Criteria (DSM-5):
1. Recurrent Episodes of Binge Eating:
o Eating, in a discrete period (e.g., within any 2-hour period), an
amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would
eat during a similar period under similar circumstances.
