(A) Give your own example of destructive obedience that occurred in your
society and explain possible reasons as to the underlying reasons why people
comply with this form of social influence. (20 marks)
Destructive obedience refers to compliance with instructions or commands from an
authority figure that results in harm or detrimental outcomes to others. One notable
example of destructive obedience in society is the Abu Ghraib prison scandal
during the Iraq War.
Example: Abu Ghraib Prison Scandal
In 2004, reports and photographs surfaced showing U.S. military personnel
abusing prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. Detainees were subjected to
physical and psychological torture, including beatings, sexual humiliation, and
other forms of degrading treatment. These acts were carried out by low-ranking
soldiers who were following orders from their superiors.
Possible Reasons for Compliance
1. Authority Pressure:
o Legitimacy of Authority: The soldiers perceived the orders as
coming from legitimate authority figures (their superiors). The
military hierarchy strongly emphasizes obedience to authority, and
soldiers are trained to follow commands without question.
o Uniform and Rank: The presence of uniformed officers and the clear
indication of rank create an environment where authority is visibly
and psychologically reinforced, making it difficult for individuals to
resist orders.
2. Situational Context:
o War Environment: The context of war can create extreme stress and
a sense of urgency. In such situations, the usual moral and ethical
standards may be compromised. The soldiers might have believed that
extreme measures were necessary for security and intelligence
purposes.
