Anorexia Nervosa
Diagnostic Criteria:
1. Restriction of Energy Intake: Persistent restriction of energy intake leading to

physical health.
2. Intense Fear of Gaining Weight: Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, or
persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain, even though at a significantly low
weight.
3. Distorted Body Image: Disturbance in the way one’s body weight or shape is
experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or persistent
lack of recognition of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
Hallmark Features:

individual’s age and height.
Extreme Dieting or Exercise: Engaging in extreme dieting, fasting, and/or excessive

1. Recurrent Episodes of Binge Eating: Eating, in a discrete period, an amount of food
that is definitely larger than most people would eat under similar circumstances, with a
sense of lack of control over eating during the episode.
2. Compensatory Behaviors: Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors to prevent
weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or other
medications, fasting, or excessive exercise.
3. Frequency: The binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors both occur, on
average, at least once a week for three months.
4. Self-Evaluation Influenced by Body Shape and Weight: Undue influence of body
shape and weight on self-evaluation.
