QUESTION 1 (35 marks)
Neo, one of the children in your class, does not look healthy. His stomach looks bloated,
and his skin looks dry and scaly. Apart from often falling sick and skipping school, Neo seems to be tired
most of the time and his teeth are decayed. On following up on Neo’s family background, you discover
that he comes from a poor family and that his parents are unemployed.
1.1 In your own words, explain what the cause of Neo’s condition might be and
what factors could be contributing to the condition. (4)
Neo’s condition could be a result of malnutrition and poor living conditions due to his family’s poverty
and unemployment. Malnutrition can lead to bloating, dry and scaly skin, tiredness, dental decay, and a
weakened immune system, which could explain why Neo often falls sick and looks unhealthy.
Additionally, poor living conditions may contribute to his poor health, as lack of access to proper
hygiene, clean water, and healthcare can exacerbate his condition.

Examples of protein-rich foods include lean meats (such as chicken and fish), eggs, dairy products (such

building and repairing muscles, bones, skin, and organs.
2. Fruits and vegetables: Neo will need a variety of fruits and vegetables to provide essential vitamins,
minerals, and antioxidants for his overall health. Examples of fruits and vegetables include oranges,
apples, strawberries, broccoli, spinach, carrots, and bell peppers. Fruits and vegetables are important for
boosting the immune system, promoting healthy digestion, and preventing diseases.
3. Whole grains: Neo will need whole grains to provide energy and essential nutrients such as fiber,
