Photoelectric effect
 1887 –Hertz – UV rays are made to fall on negative plate of discharge tube –
electric discharge was easier.
 Hallwachs – experimentally confirmed- two zinc plates inside a vacuum bulb-
UV rays falls on negative plate –current flows .
 As UV rays stopped current also stops.
 UV rays falls on positive plate- no current flows.
 JJ Thomson- When light falls metal surface electrons are emitted from the
negative plate and attracted towards the positive plate –current flows.
 If the rays falls on positive plate the electrons emitted from this plate do not
reach negative plate because electrons are negatively charged –circuit not
completed – no current flows.

,Hertz and Lenard’s observations
• Different plates –illuminated them with light of different frequencie
and different intensities and
• measured energy of
• photoelectrons and strength of
• photocurrent.

, Dependence on intensity of light
• Light of definite intensity and definite frequency falls on the plate –
photoelectrons are emitted from plate 1 and reaches plate 2 if plate
at sufficient positive potential.
• If positive potential of plate 2 is increased no increase in photocurren
because all electrons emitted are already reaching Plate 2.
• Intensity of incident light is increases,
photocurrent also increases- only when
accelerating potential and frequency of inciden
light is kept constant.
