, 1. Interviewing clients well is one of the most essential skills a lawyer should
possess.

An interview is very different from a simple discussion since it is conducted
with a specific goal in mind, such as determining the nature of the client's
problem at the beginning of the interview.

The responsibility of a good interviewer would be to identify the silent
information when the client described the nature of his or her problem. But
nonetheless, since it is the client who gives instructions, the attorneys should
be empowered to provide suggestions to the client as to what would be
preferable.

An exchange of pleasantries with the clients would be the first step in making
a good impression, and it is better for a client not to be in distress as they
would be more anxious and more at ease, this would makes the client feels
that the lawyer have his or her best interest at heart; its only when the client is
at ease, that he or she would be at ease to disclose some confidential
information about themselves1.

Purpose of an interview are as follows:

To get the necessary information that need answers, in an order which an
interview should be conducted in a chronologically, since cases are
determined with from the background facts, keeping a chronological
statement of events is very important when interviewing a client.2

Stages of interviews are as follows:

Stage 1: The initial meeting and exchange of pleasantries.

Stage 2: Identifying initial problem and goals.

Stage 3: Dealing with the preparations of the matters.

Stage 4: Establishing the facts in a chronological order.
