QUESTION 1 (35 marks)

Neo, one of the children in your class, does not look healthy. His stomach looks bloated, and his skin
looks dry and scaly. Apart from often falling sick and skipping school, Neo seems to be tired most of
the time and his teeth are decayed. On following up on Neo’s family background, you discover that
he comes from a poor family and that his parents are unemployed.

1.1 In your own words, explain what the cause of Neo’s condition might be and what factors could
be contributing to the condition. (4)

ANSWER:

Neo's condition is likely due to severe malnutrition. The bloated stomach, dry and scaly skin,
frequent illness, tiredness, and decayed teeth are indicators of poor nutrition. Contributing
factors include:

• Poverty: Lack of financial resources to afford nutritious food.

• Unemployment of Parents: Limited or no income to buy essential food items.

• Inadequate Food Intake: Insufficient quantity and quality of food.
