Why can a picture be a good resource to use to teach Foundation/Intermediate
phase English FAL learners about cultural diversity? How can you use the picture
above to teach/help learners improve literacy skills? What benefits would using
the above picture have in helping to improve literacy skills and intercultural
awareness in Foundation/Intermediate phase English FAL learners in South
African Classrooms?
Visual aids like pictures are invaluable in teaching, particularly for young learners
and those acquiring a new language (Venketasamy & Sibanda, 2021). Pictures can
captivate learners' attention, making learning more engaging and enjoyable, while
also facilitating understanding. In South Africa, a country renowned for its rich
cultural diversity, utilizing pictures to teach about cultural diversity and improve
literacy skills is a highly effective approach.
Pictures can serve as a window into diverse cultures, showcasing traditional
attire, customs, and celebrations (Omodan & Ige, 2021). By examining these
visual representations, learners can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation
of the country's cultural heritage. Moreover, pictures can be used to teach various
literacy skills, such as descriptive language, storytelling, and critical thinking
(Steenkamp, 2021).
Incorporating pictures into lessons can also cater to different learning styles,
making learning more inclusive and accessible. Furthermore, pictures can be used
to promote intercultural awareness, empathy, and respect among learners
(Venketasamy & Sibanda, 2021). By leveraging pictures in teaching, educators can
create a dynamic and engaging learning environment that celebrates diversity and
promotes literacy development.A picture of South Africans celebrating their
cultural heritage can be a powerful tool in teaching cultural diversity. This picture
shows many different cultural groups, traditional clothes, and festive
celebrations. Young learners are naturally drawn to colorful and dynamic pictures,
which can grab their attention and make them curious about cultural diversity.
