Answer the following open-ended questions to the best of your ability and give as much
information as possible.
1. Describe the school where you did your practical teaching (location, age, facilities, how
many learners are enrolled at the school, how many teachers teach at the school, the
language of learning and teaching, and so forth).
The school is located in the heart of Chatsworth an area called Bayview, on the main road
[Lenny Naidu drive] it was built in 1899 and is state owned run by the department of
education and is a public school with 192 learners. There are four blocks with classrooms,
most of its not occupied because for each grade there is only one class. the preschool and
foundation phase learners have access to a jungle gym are that is fenced and gated, the
school also has a library but is not fully accessible to learners has it is still being organized.
The computer room was recently sponsored for the school giving learners access to 30 brand
new computers and a smartboard. The hall in the school was also sponsored and many
school functions take place there for example the Nelson Mandela day and women’s day
program all took place in the hall. The school has no grounds so learners either eat in class
with their teacher or go out of the classroom in the block to eat their lunch. There is a
designated section for learner to have P.E. and a learners from the school recently sponsored
equipment to the value of R2000. There are 8 teachers who teach from grade R-7. The main
language of instruction at the school is English, content is taught in English as well.
2. Describe the classroom in which you did your practical teaching (size, facilities, learning
and teaching support materials, classroom atmosphere, and so forth).
The classroom was big and spacious I did not feel suffocated, because it was a double classroom with
twenty-two learners in it. In four rows, with boys and girls alternating. The class had enough cupboard
space to facilitate the learners’ textbooks and workbooks as well as the teacher’s files. The classroom
has a pin board so notices could be put daily or weekly. The chalkboard with ample chalk, each learner
is provided with textbooks that is mainly stored at school and only taken home for homework purposes.
The classroom also has a sink with tap not all have this. Learners could refill their water bottle instead
of always asking to leave the class
3. Describe the learners you taught during your practical teaching (number per class,
degree of readiness to learn, their home environmental conditions, and so forth).
At the school there is only one class per grade, grade 6 has twenty-two learners. I had the opportunity
to get to know they learners’ better. They all come from different social backgrounds but when they in
class it all disappears. I was so surprised to see learners care for each other the way they do. One
learner had stomach cramps and she had to go to the office and ended going off early, her friends made
sure to check up on her came to me asked to take her to the sick room, and then came back for her
belonging and took it to her. The other was when we had hot chocolate day at school and not all
learners could afford to do it, some of the learners who paid did not want to have it and asked if the
learners who didn’t pay take there’s instead. On that day I treated them to cake it was very enjoyable to
interact with them. The learners were not always enthusiastic to do their work, and never liked work to
jot down from the board, they like group discussions and games played relating to the subject.
