CHAPTER 1

The protagonist of the book, Tina Louw, is fed up with her life in the Karoo town

of Van Noodt and the farm where she lives with her family, Coetzeerus, and she

wants to flee to Cape Town in the hopes of finding a better life.

A car stops next to her while she is strolling alongside the N1, the main route

leading to Cape Town, and a wanderer gets out of the vehicle. The traveler's

face is only identifiable as a boy's due to its numerous wounds and severe

scars. He points to the entrance of the farm named "Engelsplaas" across the

road as he begins speaking with Tina. He advises Tina to approach Stefaans

Marais, the white farmer who owns Engelsplaas, for financial assistance so that

she can enrol in the Afrikaans school in the community. When Tina asks the

wanderer his name, he replies that it's Jakob. When a truck comes to get him,

he vanishes. Tina goes over to Engelsplaas and requests that Ant Lya call

Stefaans. Stefaans has bloodshot eyes and an alcoholic odour. Tina asks him

for money so that she can go to the local Afrikaans school. Tina recently

finished her seventh grade year at Rising Star, a farm school. She can stay at

the school through the end of Grade 9 and then transfer to the town's school.
