Introduction
It is imperative that indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) be incorporated into South
African education in order to meet the demands of a more inclusive and culturally
appropriate curriculum. Insufficient representation of IKS in school textbooks persists
despite policy initiatives. This study looks into how much indigenous knowledge is
promoted in school textbooks using critical discourse analysis (CDA). This study intends
to improve the incorporation of IKS in the curriculum by revealing the underlying
ideologies and power structures impacting educational content through the analysis of a
few chosen textbooks.
