Ekosistem mangrove merupakan suatu ekosistem peralihan antara darat dan laut ekosistem
terdapat di sepanjang pantai yang terlindungi dan muara sungai yang merupakan komunitas
tumbuhan pantai yang didominasi oleh beberapa jenis mangrove.
Secara umum hutan mangrove dapat didefinisikan sebagai suatu tipe ekosistem hutan yang
tumbuh di suatu daerah pasang surut (Pantai Laguna dan muara sungai) yang tergenang
pasang dan bebas pada saat air Laut surut dan komunitas tumbuhannya mempunyai toleransi
terhadap garam air laut.
Tumbuhan yang hidup di ekosistem mangrove adalah tumbuhan yang bersifat halophyte atau
mempunyai toleransi tinggi terhadap tingkat keasinan air laut dan pada umumnya bersifat
alkalin. Hutan mangrove di Indonesia sering juga disebut hutan bakau. Tetapi istilah ini
sebenarnya kurang tepat karena bakau (rhizophora) adalah salah satu famili tumbuhan yang
sering ditemukan dalam ekosistem hutan mangrove.
Secara biologis menyangkut rantai makanan ekosistem merupakan produsen primer melalui
sasaran yang dihasilkan secara hutan setelah melalui dekomposisi oleh sejumlah
mikroorganisme akan menghasilkan detritus dan berbagai jenis fitoplankton (zooplankton ikan
udang dan kepiting) yang akhirnya dimakan manusia sebagai konsumen utama.
