Lab Report Format Expectations
Utilize college level grammar and formatting when answering text based questions.
Report all equations in a proper mathematical format, with the correct signs and symbols.
Submissions with incomplete or improperly formatted responses may be rejected.

Pre-Lab Questions
1. In this lab, you will investigate two gas laws that relate pressure, temperature and pressure. In
your own words, explain Charles’ Law. When doing so, explain the relationship that exists
between temperature, volume and pressure in the context of this law. Ensure you discuss each
of those variables.
While volume is used to reduce the existence of gas, temperature is utilized to decrease volume;
nevertheless, if temperature rises, the gas will expand. Temperature existence and volume will rise
and fall in tandem with temperature fluctuations. That is essentially Charles Law.

2. In your own words, describe Boyle’s Law in the context of pressure, volume and temperature.
Ensure that you explain the relationship of each of those variables to one another in the
context of this law.
When the temperature of the gas is too high to sustain pressure, they employ Boyles' law,
which states that as the volume grows, it will inevitably drop.

EXPERIMENT 1: CHARLES’ LAW
Introduction Questions
1. In this experiment you will observe changes in volume with changes in temperature. For
temperature and volume to be linearly related to one another, what must be true
about pressure?
Charles Law states that volume and temperature are both linear.

2. Is it possible to cool a gas down to absolute zero? If you tried to, what obstacles would you
run into?
No

3. Suppose during your experiment the temperature goes up, but your observed volume goes
down. Based on your previous responses, you would know this is incorrect and an experimental
error has occurred. What do you think might cause this error? What would you do to fix this?
The thermometer or the container will most likely have a number of distinct problems. It will be
necessary for me to test the apparatus to make sure everything functions as it should.

Data and Observations
Input the three temperatures you used in this lab, and the corresponding volumes you observed at each
into Table 3, below.
Table 1: Temperature vs. Volume of Gas Data

Temperature Conditions Temperature (ºC) Volume (mL)

Room Temperature 23 6

Hot Water 38 2.1

Ice Water 12 1.1
