Gage Stokolas Part A

Question: What are the key distinctions that divide the positivist, interpretive, and
critical approaches in sociology?

Positivist, interpretive and critical sociology requires an understanding from a historical and

practical perspective along with an understanding of there differences. Sociologist who

practice the positivist theory believe that social issues can be scientifically proven from

patterns happening within that society. Although positivist seek scientific fact they may find

that their own unique perspectives can get in the way of their claims. Interpretive sociology is

understanding or interpreting human activities and the behaviours that go along with them.

Interpretive sociologist seek to correct the conflict of interest of positivist by understanding

the subjective nature of human behaviour1. Critical sociology takes a neutral approach to the

sociological study. This perspective looks at a collection of theories used to describe and

analyze society and social norms, with the goal of enhancing the freedom of the individual

while preserving social justice2. Whether the key distinctions be that one view is very

scientifically

focused whereas other views focus more on human behaviour, all perspectives and the

history within them are important when doing sociological research.
