(a) Teacher’s ethical convictions in supporting learners.
(i) Professional ethics.
These types of ethical convictions relate to the teachers
adherence to professional standards and guidelines. Teachers
should know and be well aware of the ethical principles relating
their profession, such as maintaining confidentiality, avoiding
discrimination and following appropriate conduct. Teachers
should take care of the learners at school and they should treat
each learner equally. Example: regardless of learner’s background
or where they are born and how wealthy they are, all students are
at the school to seek the same education and they have to be
taught the same way.
(ii) Care and compassion.
This ethical conviction emphasizes the importance of teacher’s
responsibility to take care of students. These types of convictions
relate to the teachers approach to education, such as the teachers
commitment to provide equitable and inclusive learning
environment. Teachers must model strong character traits
including perseverance, honesty, respect, lawfulness, fairness,
patient and unity. Teachers must treat every student with
kindness and respect without showing favoritism or judgement.
Example: most learners travel long distances to come to the
educational facility, they expect quality and well represented
education with the same treatment. Educational ethics also entails
teacher’s commitment to representing the individual needs and
strength of students.
(iii) Equity and social justice.
This ethic include integrity, honesty, loyalty, fairness, empathy and
diversity. Personal ethics can influence how teachers interact with
students and other colleagues in the educational community. It is
important for a teacher to be aware of the personal ethic
influence in the work place. Example: a school that has lack of
proper resources to use, if students has dedicated educators who
value their effort of coming to study, the same school can have
progress. Teachers can make copies of the books and provide
them to students. This ethical conviction focuses on a teacher’s
responsibility to promote equity and social justice practice.
