1 Philosophy and political philosophy both mean a search for knowledge and
truth. Political philosophy elucidates the modes of political existence.
2. Political theory is broadly understood as (a) comprehensive, including all
areas of human experience and existence, and (b) a tradition going back to
classical Greek thought.
3. Political theory is presently interpreted in a narrow sense as referring to
(a) Normative political theory, or traditional political theory, and
(b) Empirical political theory, or modern political theory.
4. In accordance with the contemporary distinction, normative political theory
is contentiously and predominantly concerned with (moral) values, while
empirical political theory is solely concerned with the factual.

1. This is an ‘open-book’ portfolio-based off-timetable exam. You have 72 hours (i.e., 3 days) to writ
the paper.Portfolios will be run through Turn-it-In.
2. The examination SESSION WILL OPEN/START on 11 October 2023 at 8am and CLOSES/ENDS
14 October 2023 at 8am (*NB: The additional 5 hours are to cater for possible challenges that may ari
with the Moodle system). Please try to submit before the stipulated closing time by 8am and do not wai
until the session closes. We have also catered for students with special needs.
3. This examination consists of THREE SECTIONS. ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS IN SECTION
ANSWER TWO (2) QUESTIONS IN SECTION B; and ANSWER ONE (1) QUESTION IN SECTION C
4. When numbering your answers ensure that each answer corresponds to the number of the questio
as it appears on the question paper.
5. Please ensure that you check (‘sign’) the ‘Honesty Declaration’ text box. If you fail to do so, you w
not be able to upload your examination answer file.
6. Ensure that the answer file containing your responses is saved as a SINGLE FILE in PDF format
only. Do not encrypt the answer file with a security code/ password.
7. Handwritten scanned pages must be saved as a SINGLE document and converted to PDF forma
only. (Refer to the ‘Student Guide on ‘How to Scan and Prepare handwritten Exams’). Before scann
ensure that all pages are numbered in the correct sequence.
8. Ensure that the answer file whether TYPED or SCANNED does not exceed the stipulated 20MB
otherwise it will not upload.
9. The examination answer file can ONLY be SUBMITTED under the ‘Assessment 03’ (744014) shel
the MyModules 2023 Semester 2 module site on Moodle. This is the same platform where you submit
your previous assessments, so you should be familiar with how to navigate the site and uploa
assessment.
