, Case Study: Try Scoring: Advancing Rugby Tourism in South Africa
1. Proposed Rugby Tourism Experiences for South Africa
a. Match Viewing Experiences:
South Africa hosts very famous rugby stadiums, including Ellis Park and Newlands,
that are a dream destination to view live rugby. Organizing packaged tours that
include tickets for the match, VIP access, and stadium tours behind the scenes could
get visitors up close and personal.
b. Rugby History and Culture Tours:
It is through guided visits to some of the oldest historical rugby clubs, such as
Western Province Rugby, and to the Rugby Hall of Fame that one understands the
importance of the game in that country.
c. Rugby Training Camps:
Organise training camps where tourists can train with local teams or former rugby
legends for hands-on experience. This would especially assist amateur players or
enthusiasts seeking to improve their skills.
d. Community Engagement:
Ask visitors to participate in some of the community-based rugby projects where they
engage themselves actively with the local players and coaches. It's cultural
exchange and grassroots rugby development rolled into one.
e. Themed Rugby Events and Festivals:
Coupled with the rugby calendar, this may have rugby-themed events, festivals, and
amateur tournaments that would draw a great following of players and supporters
alike. These can be rugby clinics, matches, and cultural events expressing South
African heritage.
2. Types of Rugby Tourists Likely to be Attracted to South Africa
a. Avid Rugby Fans:
These are tourist enthusiasts of rugby who would engage in rugby games, take visits
to places of historical interest, and engage in a few rugby games. The fascination
with them is the real-life encounter with matches and a great appreciation for the
sport's history.
b. Rugby Players and Teams:
