development communication, discussing critical theories like the New World Information
and Communication Order (NWICO) and the impact of media and multinational
corporations on global communication structures. Finally, the third section examines
health communication, emphasizing the importance of empowerment and control in the
healthcare provider-patient relationship and applying theories like Diffusion of
Innovation to real-world health promotion scenarios. Together, these sections provide a
comprehensive overview of how communication shapes and is shaped by cultural,
developmental, and health-related contexts.

QUESTION 1: The Concept of the ‘Global Village’ and the Role of Technology in
Human Communication
The term “global village” was coined by media theorist Marshall McLuhan. It describes
the way technology, particularly the internet, has made the world feel smaller by
connecting people from different parts of the globe as if they were living in a small
village. In a global village, distance and time barriers are broken down, allowing for
instant communication and cultural exchange across the world.
Technology, such as social media, smartphones, and video calls, plays a huge role in
making this global village possible. It allows people to connect and communicate in real-
time, no matter where they are. For example, a person in South Africa can easily have a
