Farm Location: Mpumalanga
Herd Size: 120 cattle
Recent Events:
New Cattle: Recently bought, heavily infested with ticks.
Weather Conditions: Higher than normal rainfall and very hot weather.
Dip Tank: Flooded due to heavy rain, resulting in no dipping for six weeks.
Treatment Attempted: Farmer used a “gal drench” from the co-op for seven sick
animals and the two that died.
Vaccinations: Young animals vaccinated against black quarter; the whole herd
vaccinated against anthrax two months ago.
Current Situation:
Deaths: Two adult cattle have died.
Illness: Fifteen adult cattle appear ill.
Symptoms Observed:
o Refusal to eat
o Listlessness
o Difficulty breathing
o Rough hair coat
o Weight loss (very thin appearance)
Post-Mortem Findings:
o Pale carcass with watery blood
o Distended gall bladder
o Enlarged liver and spleen
Reproductive Issues: Two of the new cows have pieces of afterbirth hanging
out.
