CHAPTER 4

DECIMAL FRACTIONS

Aim: To understand the place value of the digits in a decimal fraction.

4.1 WHAT IS A DECIMAL FRACTION?

A decimal fraction is a value/number where the digits are expressed as parts of 10, 100, 1000 etc.
The parts are called tenths, hundreds, etc. When you divide the numerator of a fraction with the
denominator of the same fraction, you get a decimal fraction.

EXAMPLE 4.1

4.1.1 4.1.2 4.1.3

S To indicate where the digit has a value of less than one, we use a decimal comma.
S The further right we move the smaller values the digits have in multiples of 10.

EXAMPLE 4.2

For the decimal number 5437,265 each digit has the following values:

Thousands Hundred Tens Units , Tenths Hundredths Thousandths
s
5 4 3 7 , 2 6 5

5 = five thousands = 5000
4 = four hundreds = 400
3 = three tens = 30
7 = seven units = 7
2 = two tenths = 0,2 = 2/10
6 = six hundredths = 0,06 = 6/100
5 = five thousandths = 0,005 = 5/1000

EXAMPLE 4.3

Write the following as decimal numbers:
Answer
4.3.1 five tenths (= 0,5)
4.3.2 four hundredths (= 0,04)
4.3.3 eight thousandths (= 0,008)
4.3.4 forty three thousandths (= 0,043)

, 28

EXERCISE 4.1

Write the following as decimal numbers:
4.1.1 four tenths
4.1.2 one unit and 2 tenths
4.1.3 six hundredths
4.1.4 seventy-nine hundredths
4.1.5 one thousandth
4.1.6 two hundred and forty thousandths
4.1.7 seven units and twenty six hundreds

EXERCISE 4.2

4.2.1 What is the value of each underlined digit?
Eg. 74,36 Answer - 3 tenths or 0,3

4.2.1.1 44,04 4.2.1.2 96,85 4.2.1.3 794,7
4.2.1.4 8341 4.2.1.5 841,83 4.2.1.6 100,321

4.2.2 Fill in the missing digits:
Eg. 4,836 = 4 + 0,8 + 0,03 + 0,006

4.2.2.1 5,196 = 5 + 0,1 + + 0,006
4.2.2.2 3,275 = + + +
4.2.2.3 24,834 = + + + +
4.2.2.4 8,205 = + +
4.2.2.5 36,045 = + + +
4.2.2.6 4,007 = +

4.2 MEASUREMENT

Note - 1m = 100 cm
1m = 1000 mm
1 litre = 1000 ml
1 kg = 1000 g

EXAMPLE 4.4

4.4.1 100 cm = 1m
1 cm = 1/100 m = 0,01 m
4.4.2 3 cm = 3/100 m = 0,03 m
4.4.3 4 m 26 cm = 4m + 0,26 m = 4,26 m
4.4.4 1000 mm = 1 m
1 mm = 1/1000 m = 0,001 m
4.4.5 1000 g = 1 kg
1 g = 1/1000 kg = 0,001 kg
