AUSTRALIA FILM
STUDY NOTES
MATRIC IEB ENGLISH
FILM STUDY

,Australia film study – Baz luhrmann
Red curtain- heightened reality, song, and dance to drive action, traditional theatrical
conventions

Difference in style between Australia and moulin rouge is that Australia is epic genre

Epic genre is:
 telling a recognizable story using a vast canvas- a huge amount of detail (long
panoramic shots)
 Search for characters identities- to be happy, home, where we belong, who we are
 Faraway place- she coming from England and travelling to Australia
 Historical place- oppression and segregation (mixed race children) also war

Features of epic
- Historical event, features a mythic legendary or heroic feature, extravagant setting,
lavish costumes,
- Musical, grandeur
- Panoramic settings
- On-location filming
- Authentic costumes
- Massive scale
- Expensive to produce
- Love letter to country

Genres- western, romantic epic/drama, war film

Common between moulin rouge and Australia (show Luhrmann technique)
- exaggeration and overacting- histrionic in moulin (Ziggler and satine)
- Misunderstanding- sex the poetry reading and her job

Luhrman use in both films
- Superimposition
- Narration by Nullah, Christian narrator in MR
- Color- very bright and then dull, reflects the mood, Australia- contrasts in colour as
well, England= green, Australia= dull, dry
- Fast tracking
- Music

- Print the PowerPoint notes

, Movie notes

 Opening credit for A and MR= very different,
 In A there is no element of theatre, there is an audience of the cinema,
not the theatre
In MR the
curtains open to
the 20th
centaury but in
A it’s there is
just the screen

 Superimposition and baobab tree first scene, suggesting a link to
Australia, not upside down
 More realism and less chaotic as MR
 Theme of storytelling “tell em stories” and link to traditional culture
“walk about” – process first nation boys go through as they get into
culture, identify

Baobab silhouette-
A itself and also
king George and
nalluhs home

 This scene is very calm and spiritual- silhouette lighting, warm lighting,
calm singing all emphasis the love and family of the two
 Water as a transformative element- change , as at the billabong, sir
Ashley gets killed and the plot begins
