1.1 Speech on the Language in Education Policy (LiEP) and Language of Learning
and Teaching (LoLT)
Good evening, parents,
Thank you for joining us today. I'm here to talk about an important aspect of our
children's education – the Language in Education Policy, or LiEP, and how it affects the
choice of the Language of Learning and Teaching, commonly referred to as LoLT, in our
school.
To give you some background, South Africa is a country with a rich diversity of
languages. Our Constitution recognizes 11 official languages, which reflect the variety
of cultures and communities in our nation. The LiEP was introduced to support this
diversity by allowing schools to choose the language that best suits their learners for
teaching and learning. The goal is to ensure that every child can learn in a language
they understand, which is crucial for their academic success.
However, choosing the LoLT is not always straightforward. One of the main challenges
we face is balancing the need to respect our home languages while also preparing our
children for the future. English is widely used in higher education, business, and global
communication, so many parents and educators feel it’s important for students to be
proficient in English. But at the same time, research shows that children learn best in
