QUESTION 1
1.1a. Justify why reading is regarded as essential for children’s social and
cognitive development. (10)
Reading is essential for children's social and cognitive development for several reasons:
Language Acquisition: Reading exposes children to a rich vocabulary, varied
sentence structures, and different language patterns, which enhances their
language skills and supports cognitive development.
Critical Thinking: Through reading, children encounter new ideas, perspectives,
and situations that challenge them to think critically, make inferences, and draw
conclusions, which are key cognitive skills.
Imagination and Creativity: Reading stimulates the imagination as children
visualize stories and scenarios, fostering creativity and helping them understand
the world beyond their immediate surroundings.
Social Understanding: Books often portray diverse characters and social
situations, allowing children to develop empathy, understand social norms, and
improve their interpersonal skills.
Cognitive Growth: Engaging with text requires focus, memory, and
comprehension, all of which contribute to cognitive development. Reading helps
children develop the ability to process information and make sense of complex
concepts.
Cultural Awareness: Reading exposes children to different cultures, traditions,
and ways of life, promoting cultural understanding and social development.
