Introduction to Crime Information Management Systems for Policing
QUESTION 1
1.1 The Role of the Crime Administration System (CAS) within the South African
Police Service (SAPS)
The Crime Administration System (CAS) is a computerized system used by SAPS to
record, manage, and track crime-related incidents. It plays a key role in the overall
efficiency of crime management and investigation processes.
Primary functions
1. Crime Reporting
CAS allows police officers to capture detailed information about reported crimes.
For example, when a citizen reports a burglary, the officer records details like the
type of crime, location, time, and victim’s information in the system.
2. Case Management
Once a case is registered, CAS helps officers manage the investigation. They
can add updates on the case, allocate officers to work on it, and set reminders
for follow-ups. For example, if a detective is assigned to a robbery case, they can
update the system with the progress made on the investigation.
3. Tracking Case Progress
