1.1 Competencies of leadership HR leaders and senior management require:
Key leadership competencies include emotional intelligence, conflict resolution skills, and effective
communication. Emotional intelligence enables leaders to understand and manage emotions, while
conflict resolution ensures they can mediate disputes and maintain a productive work environment.
Effective communication is essential for clear, transparent dialogue with all stakeholders.
In the case of SAFSI, the HR Director and senior management effectively used emotional
intelligence and communication when dealing with the aggrieved former majority union. By
presenting data transparently and engaging with the union politely and intelligently, they de-
escalated tensions and fostered trust.
