Contemporary Approaches to Educational Leadership and Management
Understanding (10 Marks)
1. Defining Key Indigenous and Traditional Leadership Principles
Indigenous and traditional leadership principles are deeply rooted in communal values,
collective decision-making, respect for all beings (both human and non-human), and a
strong emphasis on harmony with nature.
Key principles
Collectivism: Leadership is about serving the community and ensuring the well-
being of the group rather than focusing on individual power or status.
Consensus: Decisions are made through inclusive dialogue, aiming for
agreement across the community, fostering unity and mutual respect.
Eldership and Wisdom: Elders or experienced leaders are highly respected for
their knowledge and life experience, and they guide decisions based on long-
term vision.
Spirituality and Connection to Land: Leadership is often intertwined with
spiritual beliefs and a deep connection to the environment, with leaders acting as
stewards of both the people and the land.
