SAQ 1 Question:
1. Explain the difference between a disaccharide and a
polysaccharide.
2. What biomolecule is required as a reactant in a Hydrolysis
reaction, and forms s by-product in a condensation
reaction?
Your answer:
Two monosaccharides are joined to form a disaccharide
(e.g., two glucose monomers are joined to form the
disaccharide maltose). When several monosaccharides are
combined, they form more complex carbohydrates in the
form of a polysaccharide (e.g., many glucose monomers
are bonded together to form glycogen).
H2O. Water (H2O).
SAQ 2 Question:
1. Describe the differences in the structure of a Triglyceride
and a phospholipid.
Your answer:
A glycerol molecule with three linked fatty acid chains via
ester bonds makes up a triglyceride. A phospholipid is a
molecule of glycerol with only two connected fatty acid chains
(tails); the third fatty acid chain is swapped out for a
phosphate group.
SAQ 3 Question:
1. Describe the structure of an amino acid.
2. Proteins have a structural hierarchy, list the four
structures that make up this hierarchy.
