Prepared speech –Adapting to change Tiara Devanathan
You move from primary to high school, from high school to college and from college
into the working world. There is one constant in life and that is CHANGE. Good day
to teacher and my fellow classmates, today I will be enlightening you on ‘Adapting to
change’.
Change is simply going from same to different. One change which needs no
introduction is the Coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19 has undoubtedly made its mark
on the world, from changing the way we work and learn, to the way we interact. We
have now become masters of the art of social distancing and rarely will you find
yourself touching a surface before sanitizing it. These are all examples of adapting to
change.
So why is it important to adapt to change?
It is a simple fact of life that change is inevitable. It can come as a result of a crisis,
as a result of choice or by chance. Not a single moment goes by when everything in
our lives remain exactly the same. Nevertheless, we need to keep moving ahead.
How do we maintain that momentum and adapt to change?
Firstly, Acceptance. You have 2 options, one is to either embrace change and the
other is to simply resist it. It is human nature to resist the unknown. We remain within
our comfort zones and become overwhelmed by the consequences of change.
Change is uncomfortable and scary; however, we have the power to bring about
positive change. Those who accept, rather than resist find it easier to adapt to the
evolving world.
Secondly, Evaluate. What’s the worst that can happen? With change comes
uncertainty and with uncertainty comes anxiety. To prevent this, you need to
evaluate the possible outcomes. Decide which would be your best and worst-case
scenario. Is your worst-case scenario still daunting? A great confidence booster is to
think about the last time you were faced with a drastic change and how you got
through it. I am sure you all remember the transition to high school.
Thirdly, Assess and Approach. Whenever you are faced with change it is important
to assess how much of control you actually have over the situation and create a plan
of action. If the unwanted change is within your control, take an active approach.
However, if the change is beyond your control- for example a sudden change of
weather or the loss of a loved one- it is important to slowly adapt to the situation,
rather than waging an unwinnable war within yourself.
Lastly, Celebrate The Positives. It can be difficult to remain positive during a period
of change. However, studies have shown that positive people experience lower
levels of stress and anxiety and show better coping skills during times of hardship.
Though the positives of change may not be obvious to begin with, it is worth seeking
them out. The saying goes, ‘If you cannot find the brighter side, polish the dull one’.
