, QUESTION 1
1.1.
An Approved Inspection Authority (AIA) is a person or organization authorized
by the Department of Employment and Labour to conduct specialized inspections
and assessments concerning workplace safety, health risks, and compliance with
legislative standards. Occupational hygienists at platinum refineries must consider
the following criteria for evaluating AIA applications by the Department of
Employment and Labour:
1. Accreditation and Certification
• The organization must be accredited by the South African National
Accreditation System (SANAS) under ISO/IEC 17020 standards for
inspection bodies.
• The AIA must be certified to conduct monitoring in specific areas such as
hazardous chemical substances, asbestos, noise, ventilation, and lead.
2. Personnel Competency
• The AIA must employ personnel registered with South African Institute of
Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH). This should include at least one
Occupational Hygienist (OH), who has the overall responsibility for ensuring
that inspections are conducted according to legal and professional
standards.
• Additional personnel may include registered Occupational Hygiene
Technologists (OHT) and Occupational Hygiene Assistants (OHA). The OH
will be responsible for overseeing all activities, while OHTs may handle
calibration and sample analysis, and OHAs may assist under supervision.
3. Technical and Analytical Equipment
• The AIA must possess the appropriate monitoring and analytical equipment
required for the specific tasks (e.g., sampling for asbestos fibers or noise
levels).
