1. Syllabus Type
For this assignment, I chose to use a multi-syllabus approach. This method combines a skills-based syllabus with a topic-
based approach and is one of the most common ways to structure lessons. Alberto wants to improve his reading,
listening, vocabulary, and speaking skills, so using a multi-syllabus will work best for him. He enjoys talking about his
interests, which makes the topic-based approach ideal because it will keep him engaged and make the lessons more
interesting for him.
The skills-based approach will focus on specific abilities that Alberto needs to achieve his goals. These needs were
identified through an interview, a needs analysis, and a questionnaire he completed. The course will cover all areas of
English, including reading, listening, speaking, and vocabulary. Lessons will include listening to videos, movie clips, and
articles, which will help with both general understanding and work-related vocabulary.
The topic-based approach will use information from the student's questionnaire and interview, focusing on topics that
interest him. Since business English is important to Alberto, I will also include business vocabulary, listening, and
speaking skills to help him reach his future job goals. By tailoring the curriculum to his interests, I hope to increase his
motivation and encourage active participation in class and with homework.
2. Chosen Topics
The selection of topics was based on insights gathered from the student's interview and questionnaire responses. These
topics will not only focus on workplace vocabulary to enhance his business English skills, but also his interests which will
boost his confidence in interacting with his friends. This will also help him learn new words and understand them better,
since the topics cover a wide range of words. Authentic materials have been incorporated into all lessons, with some
lessons tailored to the student's personal interests such as the environment and science. Additionally, humour, which the
student expressed a preference for, is integrated into the lessons.
3. Target Language/Skill
The student's needs guided the selection of key skills to focus on, including listening, reading, speaking, and
pronunciation. The target language, with a focus on work-related contexts, was chosen to help him prepare for future
interviews and have productive conversations with his future colleagues about engineering.
Since he showed weak listening skills and pronunciation, the course will include many opportunities for him to practice
speaking and listening. This will help improve his listening and pronunciation, making him more confident when talking
