When discussing stress and well-being among educators, specifically lectures in Malaysian
public universities, it is important to follow sequences such as the role of educators in a
public university, the understanding of the stress phenomenon among educators, factors that
play a role, and the effects of stress on educators in higher education as a whole. Lastly, this
discussion will also touch on self-care and stress management for educators.
Stress is an important phenomenon and is often associated with the job performance, health,
and productivity level of an individual or employee. Stress can affect the productivity of
employees as well as the quality delivered by employees (otherwise handled well and
effectively). Thus, work stress can have a negative impact on the health of the employee
and hence on the well-being of the individual. Stress can be regarded as a natural feeling; it
is designed to help you cope with challenging situations. In small amounts, it can be good,
because it pushes individuals to work hard and to do their best in anything they pursue. (By
Nurul Naimah Rose, Aida Shakila Ishak, Fauziah Ismail, Siti Norayu Mohd Basir, and Nur
Qurratul’ Aini Ismail, 2022).

1.2. As an educator, demonstrate how you would deal with anger constructively. (10)
,1.1 Ten Causes of Educator Stress
1. Heavy Workload: Educators often face an overwhelming amount of administrative
duties, lesson planning, grading, and meetings, leading to stress due to time constraints.
2. High Expectations: Constant pressure from management, parents, and students to
perform at a high level can create stress.
3. Lack of Resources: Insufficient teaching materials, outdated technology, or inadequate
classroom infrastructure can make teaching challenging.
4. Student Behavior Issues: Dealing with disruptive or unmotivated students can be
emotionally draining and contribute to stress.
5. Work-Life Imbalance: Balancing professional responsibilities with personal life can
lead to burnout, especially when work demands extend beyond regular hours.
6. Job Insecurity: Educators may experience stress from fears of losing their jobs or
uncertainties regarding contract renewals or promotions.
7. Insufficient Professional Development: A lack of opportunities for growth and skill
development can result in frustration and stress for educators.
8. Organizational Change: Frequent changes in curriculum, teaching methodologies, or
policies can cause stress as educators struggle to adapt.
9. Low Salary: Financial stress due to low compensation can exacerbate feelings of
dissatisfaction and anxiety in the teaching profession.
10. Lack of Support: Inadequate support from administration, peers, or the education system
can make educators feel isolated and overwhelmed.
, 1.2 Constructive Ways to Deal with Anger as an Educator
1. Self-Awareness: Recognize the early signs of anger and understand its triggers, allowing
you to manage your emotional response before it escalates.
2. Deep Breathing: Practice deep breathing exercises to calm your mind and body, allowing
for a more measured reaction to frustrating situations.
3. Pause Before Reacting: Take a moment to step back from the situation to avoid reacting
impulsively or saying something harmful.
4. Focus on Solutions: Shift your focus from the problem to finding a solution. This
constructive approach can help redirect anger into positive action.
5. Open Communication: Use "I" statements to express how you feel without blaming
others. For example, "I feel frustrated when students are not paying attention."
6. Set Clear Boundaries: Establish and communicate boundaries with students, colleagues,
and management to prevent situations that may lead to anger.
7. Seek Support: Talk to a trusted colleague or counselor about your frustrations. Sharing
your thoughts can help reduce emotional buildup.
8. Reflect on the Situation: Analyze the root cause of your anger and consider whether it's
something you can control. This reflection can help manage long-term stressors.
9. Engage in Physical Activity: Exercise, such as taking a walk or stretching, can release
built-up tension and provide a healthy outlet for anger.
10. Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness or relaxation techniques, such as
meditation, to stay present and manage emotional reactions more effectively.
