Assignment C, Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general
evaluation of the book - you won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one
unit and the contents, but say as much as you can.
This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and
why or why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to
this part. You do not need to refer to the class described for part 2 of this assignment.
300 - 500 words
Unit 1 of this course book is clearly structured with articles, informal activities and reports
that students can work on. The structure and order of this unit is very logical and gets
progressively more difficult. From learning grammar at the beginning of the unit to end
with learning about the varieties of English that is used in different parts of the world.
This unit also makes good use of practice, recycling and revision. There are a variety of
revision exercises to check students understanding of how globalization has affected
different parts of the world. There is no mention of the teacher’s book in this unit however,
it might be listed in another unit of this course book.
While some of the activities are pair work this unit has a variety of exercises and activities
that students can work individually on. The materials are clearly laid out and there is a
good variety such as pictures, articles, diagrams, etc. There is a good balance between all
of the four skills and language areas. With activities ranging from listening and reading to
writing reports, it should provide a good challenge for advanced level students. The text is
of an appropriate level and should be fun and challenging for the students. The listening
and reading texts revolve around topics that the students should be familiar with thus it
should hold their attention. The topics are also of an appropriate nature as they are
centred around globalisation should not be offensive to any culture or religion.
While this unit does provide a variety of practice activities and group discussions, it does
not mention any type of test for the students. Generally, these type of books are a bit
expensive however in this unit there is no indication of the price of the book.
In this unit there is no use of grammar reference pages or vocabulary lists for the students.
In conclusion, I would definitely like to use this course book in my teaching curriculum as
judging by unit 1, it is a well-orchestrated and designed course book and is very suitable
for advanced level students.
