,ANSWER 1
Minutes of the Meeting: Agenda Item 4.1 - Students’ Tuition Fees Debts
Date:
Location: Gauteng College
Chairperson: Mr. Selby, Financial Manager
Discussion:
The meeting was called to address the pressing issue of unpaid tuition fees at Gauteng
College. Mr. Selby began by highlighting the severe impact of the national economic
decline, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, load shedding, and widespread
corruption. These factors have led to high unemployment rates, directly affecting
parents' ability to pay tuition fees, which in turn threatens the college's financial stability.
Mr. Moss acknowledged the financial struggles faced by parents and mentioned that
some student debts had been referred to the credit bureau for further investigation.
Ms. Small proposed debt counselling as a potential solution, explaining that it could help
parents restructure their debts, allowing them to meet household expenses and tuition
payments. She emphasized the importance of exploring this option to avoid
consequences like blacklisting or student deregistration.
Ms. Zondi supported the idea but cautioned about the drawbacks of debt counselling,
such as prolonged debt repayment periods, higher interest payments, and limited
access to new credit. She suggested that parents should also consider negotiating
longer-term payment plans with the college.
Ms. Moima, representing the Student Representative Council (SRC), suggested
organizing fundraising events, such as marathons, sports tournaments, and beauty
, pageants, to assist students with tuition fees. She also proposed seeking sponsorships
from local businesses and inviting bank representatives to inform students about
available student loans.
Mr. Moss proposed the establishment of an academic award committee to provide
bursaries based on various achievements, including academic performance, sports,
debates, and creative writing. This initiative aimed to encourage high achievers and
provide financial support to deserving students.
Mr. Selby concluded the discussion by asking for additional suggestions, to which Mr.
Moss recommended creating a suggestion box for further fundraising ideas. This
proposal was accepted without objections, and it was decided that the SRC would
manage the suggestion box and coordinate with the College Board.
The meeting ended with Mr. Selby expressing gratitude for the participants'
contributions and promising to provide feedback at the next College Senate meeting.
