literature looking into how the issue of discipline could be addressed in our schools.
Introduction (150 words)
Purpose of the Review:
The issue of school discipline is one that deeply affects educational systems worldwide. Effective
discipline strategies are essential for maintaining a productive learning environment, promoting
student well-being, and preventing misconduct. Without proper disciplinary frameworks, schools
face disruptions, academic failure, violence, and absenteeism. Moreover, discipline is tied to broader
social issues such as socio-economic inequality and mental health. This review examines how school
discipline has been addressed globally, on the African continent, and specifically in South Africa. By
considering the origins, causes, effects, and solutions in each context, we can better understand how
different regions have tackled the challenges of maintaining order in schools.
Scope:
This literature review draws on a wide array of sources from different regions, exploring the
evolution of school discipline. It covers punitive and rehabilitative approaches and examines how
cultural, social, and economic factors influence the effectiveness of disciplinary measures. The
review focuses on how global, continental, and local efforts intersect, and identifies gaps in current
research that warrant further investigation.
