ANSWER'Brilliant. Is there one thing that I do not have to do?'
Describe the tone and tempo that you would use when speaking this line. [2] - ANSWERI would
adopt a slow tempo and a threatening, aggressive, and intimidating tone when saying
this line.
Give one reason to explain your choice of tone and another for tempo. [4] - ANSWERI would adopt a
threatening tone so that it would convey John Tate's desperation in this scene. This tone would be
achieved through intonation, more specifically placing emphasis on the word 'one'. He is losing
control over the group and he has to try and convince the gang to be on his side whilst doing
everything himself, thus, becoming desperate. I would adopt a slow tempo in order to portray John
Tate's anguish in this extract. This would allow the audience to understand John Tate's motives in the
scene: that he needs to regain power within the gang's hierarchy. The stress that this is putting him
under, causes him to become violent and intimidating
Briefly describe Jan's social class. [2] - ANSWERJan is very much nearer the bottom of the social
hierarchy. She is on the same level as Mark,
her close friend. She is above Adam and Brian, however, below the rest of the gang. She does
not have a massive say in the gang's decisions. She also looks for reassurance from the gang
members, mainly Phil.
Suggest a suitable hair, costume and make-up for Jan in this extract and explain how they could be
used in order to show her social status. [6] - ANSWERWhen Jan is compared to the other characters,
she is less guilty as she 'went home'. This innocence needs to be shown through her costume, hair
and make-up.
Personally, I think that Jan should wear mid-rise, embroidered blue jeans, a clean, white, unbranded
blouse and a school branded coat. Also, she should wear white, ankle socks and Ugg boots. The
abundance of white in this costume would symbolise her purity, innocence and non-antagonising
role within the play. Moreover, the fact that she is wearing a school coat would emphasise the age of
Jan, letting us know more about the gangs general age. Furthermore, I would ensure that Mark's
costume would have similar features, namely that he should be wearing denim, in order to show Jan
and his relationship, emphasising their less important roles in the group.
In terms of hair and make-up, I believe that both should be fairly natural and neat. Jan should have a
mid-length pony tail and a natural face of make-up: only wearing foundation that matches her skin
tone and nude eyeshadow. Similar to the costume choices, I think that this would successfully
