, Background
The book is a continuation from the first book, Onderwêreld and you need
to know what happened in that book, to understand what is happening in
this one ...
Onderwêreld
Greg Owen is Headboy at Lawson College, in the Drakensberg. He is a
border and makes friends with a new boy called Eckardt Wilken. Ekhart
teaches Greg how to hack computers and how to get onto the dark web.
Eckardt's pseudonym for hacking is Ekk-0 and Greg's is G-4ce.
Greg's hacking is a rebellion against the school system, the headmaster's
dictatorship-style and his father's dominating and manipulative way of
parenting. The story unfolds Greg's development as a hacker and how he
moves into the underworld of crime. He eventually discovers a plot by a
group called Project Nursery Rhyme which was to create a highly
infectious bird-flu virus and then release a vaccine, so that they could
become wealthy. The members of the group were the Butcher (Dr.
Pienaar), the Baker (a virologist) and the Candlestick-maker (Greg's
father). His father's company had also supplied the pills his older brother,
John, used to commit suicide.
It is at the end of the story that Greg realises he was a victim of social
engineering by Eckardt who had programmed him to cause the
destruction of his father and Dr. Pienaar. In the end, we discover that
Eckardt was the son of the judge who was bribed by Greg's father and Dr.
Pienaar in their case. He did not fulfil his bribe promise and Dr. Pienaar
murdered him. Eckardt wants Greg's family to suffer as much as he did.

Reboot
Literal: Reboot is when computer programs are closed and a computer is
switched off and then turned on again, in order to re-start.
Figurative: can be applied when trying to solve a problem. It means when
you start over again.
Flashback (6 months earlier): Xander Gericke remembers finding his father
with a gun in his hand, slumped over his desk. He is 11 years old. His dad
askes Xander not to tell his mom.
Present day: Xander is 12 years old and he goes into his dad's study to tell
him 2 men are at the door for him. One is called Doc. The father is
frightened and tells Xander to hide and not come out until he is told to.
Xander hears his mom scream. His father tells him to be clever and hide
urgently. A man arrives at the door and calls his dad - Judge Gericke.
Xander hears his father being punched and then collapsing. That is the
last time he sees his father.
Hint: Judge Gericke is the judge who oversaw the trial of Dr. Pienaar and
Greg Owen's dad (for the creation of a bird-flu virus with the potential to
sell the vaccine.) He was supposed to keep quite and make sure that they
got off all the charges, but he did not do that. Xander witnesses his father
being taken and then changes his name to Eckardt so that he can plot his
revenge on the Owen family by using their son, Greg.
