MINUTES FOR AGENDA ITEM 4.1: CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
CELEBRATIONS
On the agenda item 4.1, the discussion was focused on the upcoming Cancer
Awareness Campaign celebrations, an event regarded as a vital part of Conwell
College’s annual activities. The event aims to educate staff and students on cancer,
emphasizing prevention, living with cancer, and encouraging early detection.
The meeting began with a brief introduction by Dr. Nku, who highlighted the critical
importance of cancer awareness in the workplace. He mentioned that cancer has a
significant impact on the labor force, particularly among individuals aged 25 to 49, which
represents a large segment of the workforce. He further acknowledged the challenges
faced by the college community, including issues related to drug abuse, which
necessitates stronger support systems such as enhanced counseling services.
Dr. Tlou, a researcher at the college, provided an overview of the World Cancer Day
2024 theme, Increasing Impact through Transparency, Accountability, and Partnerships.
She emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to address the global burden of
cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer remains the leading
cause of death worldwide, with more than 25 million lives lost to the disease. Dr. Tlou
stressed that the college’s awareness campaign should align with global efforts to
reduce the impact of cancer.
Following this, suggestions were made to enhance the 2024 campaign. Dr. Mago
recommended inviting a guest speaker from the Department of Health to share insights
on how businesses and individuals can contribute to reducing the spread of cancer. She
also praised the government’s progress in reducing cancer infections, particularly in the
economically active age group.
