Agenda item 4.1 centered on discussions regarding the forthcoming Cancer Awareness
Campaign at Conwell College, an important annual event aimed at educating staff and students
about cancer. The campaign focuses on prevention, living with cancer, and promoting early
detection.
Dr. Nku commenced the meeting with a brief introduction, emphasizing the significance of
cancer awareness in the workplace. He noted that cancer greatly impacts the labor force,
especially individuals aged 25 to 49, which represents a large portion of the workforce. He also
mentioned some challenges faced by the college, including issues related to substance abuse,
which necessitates strengthening support systems like counseling services.
Dr. Tlou, a college researcher, provided an overview of the 2024 World Cancer Day theme:
Increasing Impact through Transparency, Accountability, and Partnerships. She stressed the
need for collective efforts to combat the global burden of cancer, noting that according to the
World Health Organization (WHO), cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, with over
25 million lives lost. Dr. Tlou urged that the college’s campaign should align with international
efforts to lessen cancer's impact.
Several suggestions for enhancing the 2024 campaign followed. Dr. Mago proposed inviting a
guest speaker from the Department of Health to discuss how businesses and individuals can help
reduce cancer prevalence. She praised the government’s progress in reducing cancer rates,
particularly in the economically active age group.
