A growth mindset is the belief that one’s intelligence and skills grow and develop over
time; whereas a fixed mindset is the belief that the knowledge and skills that one has are fixed,
and are not capable of anything more (Smith, 2020). The type of mindset that we possess can
greatly affect our professional development. When an individual has a growth mindset, they
understand that education, effort, and grit can gradually improve their knowledge, and skills
needed for professional growth and finding success. When faced with tasks that are challenging
or met with adversities, rather than avoiding or giving up, they can overcome and keep going. On
the contrary, professional development isn’t possible with a fixed mindset. Those with a fixed
mindset have a perspective that they have a certain level of talent and intellectual abilities.
Therefore, they avoid anything challenging, outside their comfort zone, and naturally given
intellect or talents.
“Tyranny of Now” vs. “Power of Yet"
Understanding the difference between “the tyranny of now” and “the power of yet” is
critical to professional development because they respectfully represent differing viewpoints on
professional growth. The concept of “the power of yet”, promotes a growth mindset, which can
increase productivity. The “tyranny of now” concept represents having a fixed mindset, focusing
on the limitations of what can be done in the here and now. This notion is emphasized in the
Standford Alumni video lecture “Developing a Growth Mindset with Carol Deck”, which
discusses the grading system in high school in Chicago, where students would receive a pass or
“not yet” grade instead of a pass-fail grade. Carol Dweck stated; “Because if you fail, you’re
nowhere but if you get the grade “not yet” you’re on a learning curve … “Not yet” gave them a
