SECTION A
QUESTION 1
1.1. Leland et al. (2013) suggest that we must read what we understand because if a
piece is beyond our understanding, then we get nothing out of it. Do you agree
with this view? Briefly explain your answer in a paragraph of no more than FIVE
sentences.
I agree with Leland et al. (2013) that it is important to read what we understand. When we
read something that is difficult for us to understand, we might find it difficult to understand
the key concepts, which prevents us from understanding and learning what we have read.
Overly complicated reading can be discouraging and frustrating, which makes it difficult to
stay engaged with the text. Contrarily, reading text that is understandable to us enables us
to fully grasp the content, draw connections, and retain the knowledge. Finding the right
balance between pushing ourselves intellectually and making sure we can comprehend and
apply what we read is crucial.
1.2. In a paragraph of no more than 200 words, explain in what way the language skills
of reading and writing have a symbiotic relationship? Provide ONE suitable
example to illustrate the symbiotic relationship between these two skills.
Reading and writing are mutually reinforcing and have a symbiotic relationship. Reading
helps us become better writers by exposing us to a variety of writing forms, words, and
sentence patterns. It enhances our capacity for successful communication and aids in the
development of our feeling of language flow. Similar to how reading improves writing skills,
writing forces us to organize our thoughts, evaluate, and comprehend material. For
instance, when writing an essay, we must study and comprehend a variety of sources,
synthesize data, and then clearly express our ideas. Our reading abilities are improved
through this process because it promotes critical thinking and in-depth text engagement.
Reading and writing together can improve our total language ability in this way.
QUESTION 2
2.1. A multimodal response can be used to interconnect different subjects, encouraging a
multidisciplinary (looking at a concept from multiple perspectives) approach for a better
understanding of these subjects. With reference to Text A, explain how the picture can be
used for both an English FAL lesson and a Social Science lesson in a multicultural
classroom. Your answer must be written as a paragraph that does not exceed 150 words.
In a multicultural classroom, the picture from Text A can be utilized successfully for both a
Social Science lesson and English FAL lesson. The picture might act as visual trigger to pique
debate and improve language abilities in an English FAL course. Learners can discuss the
cultural diversity represented in the picture, explain it, and offer their comments. They can
work on their vocabulary in the areas of diversity, multiculturalism, and cross-cultural
interaction. The picture can be used in a Social Science class to discuss multiculturalism and
