History Notes-Mughal IndiaHow did the Mughal empire begin?
-Over the centuries many different people invaded India such as
Greece under the rule of Alexander the Great.
-They were attracted by the fertile land and opportunities for trade.
-They were also attracted by India wealth, and its spices, silks and
precious stones.
-Because of all the invasions there was a rich mix of people, cultures,
languages and religions.
-The merchants were Muslim but most people in India were Hindu.

-In 1526 the Mughal leader Babur, invaded India.
-The Mughals were a Muslim Dynasty who originally came from
Persia (now known as Iran).
-They conquered the local sultan (A king in a Muslim state) and took
over Delhi.
-Over 150 years they extended their empire throughout India.
-The local rulers were allowed to keep power as long as they paid
taxes to the Mughal emperor.
-Babur’s grandson Akbar ruled from 1556 to 1605. During his rule it
was a golden age for the Mughal empire.
-Travellers were amazed by its wealth and power.
-He introduced efficient government and encouraged trade.
-The Hindu population accepted their Islamic emperor because of his
religious tolerance.
-However non-Muslims were forced to pay special tax.
