1.1.1 Why is it important to have a language-rich classroom in early childhood
and elementary classrooms? (3 marks)
Creating a language-rich classroom is really important in the early years because it
helps children naturally expand their vocabulary and learn to express themselves better.
When children are surrounded by new words, different sentence structures, and various
ways of communicating, they get the chance to pick up language skills in an engaging
and supportive way. This type of environment allows them to not only learn how to
speak and listen but also builds a strong foundation for reading and writing as they
grow.
1.1.2 How would you organize your classroom to promote a language-rich
environment? (4 marks)
To set up a language-rich classroom, I would create different zones where children can
practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking. For example, I’d have a cozy reading
area filled with age-appropriate books, a space for writing with materials like pencils,
markers, and paper, and a quiet area where they can listen to stories or engage in
interactive audio activities. I’d also display words and phrases on walls – a "word wall" –
so that kids get familiar with commonly used vocabulary. There would be labels around
the room for things like “door,” “desk,” and “window” to help them connect words to
objects in their environment. Comfortable seating would encourage kids to settle down
