STUDY

1.1 INTRODUCTION
You have probably heard that people or human resources are an organisation’s most
important asset. This is indeed true, and organisations must look after their people.

Have you ever wondered who is responsible for promoting the learning and development
of human resources in the workplace or an organisation? Lesson 1 introduces you to the
role and importance of human resource development in the work environment. In this
lesson, you will learn about the relationship between Human Resource Management
(HRM) and Human Resource Development (HRD). The difference between these two
concepts is also clarified. The key HRD activities are then discussed in detail. Finally,
the factors contributing to the challenges and success of HRD are examined.

To get started, think about the recent changes in the world. We now find ourselves being
connected to a global community where everyone is free to express their beliefs and
individuality. Human rights and democracy are no longer optional; they are now very
important foundations without which no community can function. This has led to legislative
changes that serve the community and regulate how people operate in their immediate
environments. Women also seem to have taken their rightful place in all areas of life and
are no longer seen as fulfilling a supportive role. Above all, technology has become
increasingly important and highly specialised. These days, information on the internet can
be accessed at the simple touch of a button. It is indeed true to say that “the world is at
our fingertips”. Finally, education at all levels has become one of the major focus points
of the government. We cannot afford to face this competitive environment without the
necessary knowledge and skills. Therefore, organisations must invest in their people and
provide them with the necessary knowledge, skills, and competencies to perform at their
best. Having a dedicated and skilled workforce has enormous benefits for organisations.
